The chess-clock his deadly weapon

Liu Zongze, of Wuhan city, Hubei province, was champion of Xiangqi Enthusiasts Grand Tournaments in 2002 and again in 2004. He is renowned for his quick fire in match games. Wherever he goes, his weapon is always with him. That deadly weapon is his chess-clock. When he meets an opponent, immediately he would draw his chess-clock out. He is feared far and wide, so much so that his opponents usually ask for a longer playing time against him having a shorter time, for example 6 minutes against 3 minutes, 10 or even 15 minutes against 5 minutes.

Every year Liu Zongze would tour almost half of China, everywhere he goes, he would play the stronger local players, some of them are amateurs, some are expert players. And gradually, he perfected his special technique of fast game in order to survive. For many years now, Liu Zongze thus earns his living playing different opponents, winner takes all.

Facing the amateur players, fast moves and quick reaction are powerful winning weapon in the hands of Liu Zongze. However, against the expert (professional) players, too fast and too quick a move is a burden, a defect. Liu aims to be an expert (professional) player, gets a decent living and be employed by a top Xiangqi team, just like in the case of a footballer.

For him he choice is difficult, whether to continue to play fast in the game or to slow it down.
