Many thanks to our Xiangqi friend Mr. Agostino Guberti, president of Italian XiangQi Federation, who has kindly let us know that from May 20 to June 4, 2006, there will take place in Turin the most important chess event ever to be held in Italy.

Mr. Guberti said : "This could be a wonderfull occasion for Xiangqi to show all the world chess player its beauty. China and World Xiangqi Federation could send for this event players and xiangqi sets to let all the international chess players from every countries in the world come in touch with Chinese Chess."

The Chess Olympiad – A record breaker


The most important chess event ever to be held in Italy will take place in Turin from May 20 to June 4, 2006.

The Olympiad is the most important chess event in the world and attracts far more players and spectators than any other event. However, the Turin Olympiad is going to be something really special and it is set to break all the records. It will be held in the largest venue ever to accommodate such a championship: the Oval Stadium, especially-built for the Winter Olympic Games and which is an awesome 21,000 square metres.

Over 140 men’s and 100 women’s teams will take part, together with their trainers, referees and judging panels.

They will be accommodated in the village built especially for the Winter Olympics. State of the art technology will play a very important role throughout the games. A record breaking 450 matches per day will be broadcast live on the official Olympic web site. All this will be made possible thanks to the invaluable sponsorship of companies such as General Electric, Fondazione San Paolo, the Fiat Group, and the Region of Piedmont and the City of Turin.

Other important events will be held simultaneously during the same period as the main Olympiad: The Computer World Chess Championship, the F.I.D.E. general assembly, with delegations from all of the world's federations. In addition, there will be a host of other exhibitions on chess and how it features in the worlds of cinema, theatre, music, literature & computer science. Eminent figures in these fields will be attending. There will also be countless tournaments open to all visitors who would simply like to play chess in the special atmosphere that only an Olympiad has.

The Olympiads will be a truly mega event. Not only will there be the more than 3,000 professional players, trainers, judges & referees and federation representatives, but also thousands and thousands of chess lovers from all around the globe.

Among those exhibiting chess merchandise and goods there will be leading companies from Italy as well as Germany, France, Holland & the United States etc.
